It is here that Bendict wrote the Benedictine Rule that became the founding principle for western monasticism. The Abbey is located on a mountain near the town of Cassino in the Lazio region. Over the centuries the Abbey has been attacked and destroyed on numerous occasions. The most recent occurred during WWII during the Battle of Monte Cassino. The Abbey was later restored using the original plans.
