Temple of Minerva Photo Gallery
Start Here for a photo tour of the Temple of Minerva in Assisi or select from the list below. The Temple was built in the 1st century BC and it was dedicated to Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom. Over time the building was abandoned and then repurposed for a number of uses. One of which was the municipal jail. Eventually the temple was restored and used once again as a sacred building and was called the church of San Donato. In 1539 Pope Paolo III decided to dedicate it to the Virgin Mary, the queen of true wisdom and renamed the temple Santa Maria sopra Minerva (St. Mary over Minerva).
