The Festa della Sensa (Feast of the Ascension) is the oldest event in Venice that also commemorates two important dates in the history of the La Serenissima (Venetian Republic). This is a grand celebration with the highlight of the festival being the Sposalizio del Mare (Marriage of the Sea) ceremony joining the city to the sea.
