Did You Know? Italy
Few individuals have shaped world history like Julius Caesar.
A brilliant military commander, gifted politician, and influential writer, Caesar expanded Rome’s territory, introduced important reforms, and forever altered the course of the Roman Republic. As an accomplished writer, Caesar would document his campaigns.
His Commentarii de Bello Gallico (Commentaries on the Gallic War) details his victory over the Gallic leader, expanding Rome’s territory across modern-day France, Belgium, parts of Switzerland, and Germany. The Commentarii de Bello Civili (Commentaries on the Civil War) details his victory over his political rival Pompey the Great, securing total control of Rome.
His assassination on the Ides of March (March 15, 44 BC) was intended to save the Republic—but instead triggered a series of civil wars that ultimately led to the rise of the Roman Empire.
His name became so synonymous with leadership that words like Kaiser and Tsar are derived from “Caesar.”
