When the Western Roman Empire collapsed, Italy didn’t suddenly become a land without civilization. Instead, new rulers stepped into the political vacuum—and one of the most fascinating was Theodoric the Great, king of the Ostrogoths.
Theodoric conquered Italy in the late fifth century and established a kingdom centered on Ravenna. But rather than destroying Roman institutions, he attempted to preserve them.
Theodoric admired Roman culture and understood that Italy’s sophisticated administrative system could benefit his new kingdom. Roman officials continued working in government, Roman laws remained influential, and Roman architecture and traditions were preserved.
He even commissioned major building projects. Ravenna flourished under his rule, and some of the most impressive surviving monuments from this period date from his reign. These monuments in Ravenna include the Arian Baptistery, Basilica di Sant’Apollinare Nuovo, Mausoleo di Teodorico, and Palazzo di Teodorico. The Mausoleum was his greatest surviving monument. Built with enormous stone blocks, it demonstrates the distinctive character of Ostrogothic Italy.
Theodoric himself was a Goth, but he ruled over an overwhelmingly Roman population. His kingdom therefore became a fascinating mixture of Gothic military traditions and Roman civil culture.
Yet Theodoric’s reign wasn’t without problems. Religious differences between his Gothic followers and many Roman subjects created tension, and toward the end of his life, relations with the Roman aristocracy deteriorated.
After his death in 526, his kingdom eventually weakened and became caught up in a devastating conflict with the Byzantine Empire.
Still, Theodoric left behind an intriguing legacy.
He wasn’t simply a barbarian king who conquered Rome. He was a ruler who recognized the value of the civilization he inherited and tried to preserve much of it.
His story reminds us that the transition from Rome to medieval Italy wasn’t as simple as textbooks sometimes make it seem.
