Did You Know? Italy
The ancient Romans were master builders, and one of their greatest achievements was an incredible network of roads stretching more than 250,000 miles across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.
Their most famous road, the Appian Way, was begun in 312 BC and connected Rome to southern Italy. Built with layers of stone, gravel, and sand, many Roman roads have survived for over 2,000 years.
These roads allowed armies to move quickly, merchants to trade efficiently, and ideas to spread throughout an empire spanning three continents.
It’s no wonder the saying, “All roads lead to Rome,” has endured for centuries.
