  • How to Dye Easter Eggs Using Onions

    By Anthony Parente

Did you know that you could make golden brown Easter eggs with the skin of onions? This Italian tradition has been in my family for generations and it is a great way to make dyed eggs for Easter. Here are some step-by-step instructions for you to make your own dyed eggs using onion skins.

    Instructions:

      Dyed Egg Using Onions
    1. Fill pot with enough water to cover the eggs.
    2. Place onion skins in water. You want enough to cover the bottom of the pot.
    3. Put the eggs on top of the onion skin.
    4. Place more of the onion skin on top of the eggs.
    5. Bring water to a boil.
    6. Cook for an additional 3-4 minutes.
    7. Take of heat and cover with a lid for 15 minutes.
    8. Drain water & discard onion skin.
    9. Add cold water to the pot with the eggs & let sit for 15-20 minutes.
    10. Remove from water and refrigerate.
    11. Your eggs are done and ready for you to hand out on Easter.

    Helpful Hints:

    1. You can also use the skin of red onions to dye your eggs. This can be used instead of the skin from the brown onions or with the skin to create a different dyed effect.
