  • Volo dell'Angelo (Flight of the Angel)

    By Anthony Parente

    Volo dell'Angelo Basilicata
Located in the Parco Regionale di Gallipoli Cognato in the heart of the Basilicata region is the Dolomiti Lucane (Lucanian Dolomites). It gets its name from similarities to peaks located in the Dolomites of northern Italy. On the top of these mountains, you will find the medieval villages of Pietrapertosa and Castelmezzano. Both are perfect locations for birdwatchers as many birds of prey have nests on the rock faces. It is also a great area for trekkers, rock climbers and mountain bike enthusiasts. These two villages have a created a more extreme and adventurous way to experience the beauty that this area has to offer by linking the two villages with one of the tallest and longest zip lines in the world called the Volo dell'Angelo (Flight of the Angel).

This is a one-of-a-kind experience that is available during the summer. You can take a solo flight or share this memory with a partner. If you and your spouse or significant other enjoy extreme adventures this is perfect way to spend time with each other. How often do you get to soar through the air like two love birds as you share a kiss while suspended between heaven and earth. For a solo flight you must be 16 years of age or older and between 35 and 120 kg (77 and 264 pounds). For couples the total weight cannot exceed 150 kg (330 pounds) and the difference in weight cannot exceed 40 kg (88 pounds).

You can depart from either village as there are two different lines. If you choose to start in Pietrapertosa you will be on the San Martino line. You will depart at an altitude of 1,020 meters (3,346 feet) and arrive in Castelmezzano at an altitude of 859 meters (2,818 feet) travelling 1,415 meters (4,642 feet) reaching a top speed of 110 km/h (68 m/h). Once you reach Castelmezzano you will be able to get off and enjoy the village. Don't rush to take the trip back. Each medieval village is worth the time to enjoy the cuisine and take in all the sites and views they have to offer. When you are ready you can take a shuttle to get to the Peschiera line to make your return trip to Pietrapertosa. This line starts at an altitude of 1,019 meters (3,343 feet) and ends at an altitude of 888 meters (2,913 feet) covering a total of 1,452 meters (4,764 feet) reaching a top speed of 120 km/h (74.5 m/h).

Before you go to either village make sure to visit Volo dell'Angelo to find out about the rules/restrictions for single and double flights. If you are looking to wear a GoPro please note that according to their FAQ page: The use of cameras or own shooting equipment is not allowed without authorization, it can only be used on a helmet with a specific request at the ticket office at check-in. Be aware of what is allowed and what is not. For example tanktops are prohibited. The last thing you want to do is make the trip to either village only to find out you cannot take flight.
