Sardinia
The beautiful island of Sardinia is filled with many wonderful treasures, sandy beaches and breath taking views. Sardinia's history is long and somewhat mysterious. Over centuries it has been invaded by the likes of the Arabs, Byzantines, Carthaginians, Phoenicians and Romans. These cultures may be gone but they have left an enduring impression that can be seen in the traditions, monuments and lifestyle. Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea (Sicily being the first). The island lies between Italy, Tunisia and Spain. The closest neighbor to Sardinia is the French island of Corsica, which is located to the north and separated by the Strait of Bonificio. According to ISTAT (Italy's National Institute of Statistics) Sardinia, as of 2005, has a population of 1,655,677, which ranks them 11th out of 20 regions. It also ranks third in total area and approximately 82% of the region is either hilly or mountainous. The region itself consists of 377 comunes which reside in the following 8 provinces: Cagliari (regional capital), Carbonia-Iglesias, Medio Campidano, Nuoro, Ogliastra, Olbia-Tempio, Oristano and Sassari. Up until 2006 the region was only divided into 4 provinces. The region also includes the islands of Asinara, Caprera, San Pietro, Sant'Antioco and the Maddalena Archipelago. There is much to learn about the region of Sardinia. From its vast history to its various traditions and customs this guide will help you uncover all the charm and beauty that this region has to offer.
