Trinitapoli, originally in Foggia Province, served for centuries as a place where shepherds from Abruzzo came to spend the winter with their sheep. The shepherds called it Casalde Palia after the straw houses they built there. The name was later changed to Casale della Trinita after the Benedictine Trinity Abbey built there by the monks. Near Trinitapoli is the ancient (11th century BC) submerged seaside town of Salapia, now an archeological site. Italian archaeologists have also discovered fertility rite temples, tombs and a large Bronze Age well used for sacrifices (animals, corn etc.) to an unnamed fertility goddess. The archaeologists recently unearthed a male skeleton from 1600 BC who was very tall – slightly over 8' – prompting media reports that a race of giants used to inhabit Italy. Scientists, however, believe the giant was the result of crossbreeding between locals and tribes from the Balkans. Like Minervino Murge, Trinitapoli is part of the Alta Murgia National Park.
