Minervino Murge and San Ferdinando di Puglia

    From: Barletta-Andria-Trani Province, Puglia

    Minervino Murge

Minervino Murge is called the "balcone della Puglia" (balcony of Puglia) because of the fantastic views of the Ofanto valley, the Tavoliere and the Appenines from its location on the edge of the Murge at 445 meters above sea level. The name Minervino is probably from an ancient temple found there dedicated to Minerva. Minervino Murge once was home to the ancient Iapyges people, and Romans built villas there. It's also the site of Saint Michael Grotto, a 70-meter-long cave popular with spelunkers and tourists. The grotto, whose entrance is a steep stone staircase, is filled with stalactites and stalagmites, as well as several frescoes. Minervino Murge is an agricultural town, producing sheep, pigs, mushrooms, asparagus and handmade pasta. Their "Salsiccia di Minervino" is well known. Each April Minervino Murge hosts a "Lamb and Pecorino Fair", followed by a "Cardoncello Mushroom and Sausage Fair" in October. The town is part of the Alta Murgia National Park.

    San Ferdinando di Puglia

San Ferdinando di Puglia is known for their artichoke cuisine, popular in their local restaurants. The town has hosted the National Artichoke Fair each November for almost half-a-century.
