Margherita di Savoia, located to the south of the Gulf of Manfredonia, is home to one of the largest salt-works in Italy, an industry that has always been the economical mainstay of the town. The salt-works, which encompass 20 kilometers of coastline and up to 5 kilometers inland, date back to the 3rd century BC. Said to be the most important salt-works in Europe, today's modern machinery refine salt for industrial and table use. Previously called Salina di Barletta, its current name was bestowed in 1879 to honor Queen Margherita of Savoy. The Romans developed a brisk salt trade with the Orient. Each June the town celebrates with their Salt Art Festival. Today it is a bathing and health resort, boasting the very popular Terme di Margherita di Savoia thermal baths.
