  • Living in Ischia, Italy and New Jersey, U.S.A.
On my new Web site, discover my life and work as I try to maintain a career and marriage while living in Italy and the United States
    Our Paesani

    by Francesca Di Meglio

My goal has always been to bring you information about Italy, the country as it is today and not the fantasy fed to us by the media and our relatives who lived in a different Italy in a different era. In my quest to discover modern Italy and share it with you, I met my husband Antonio Gerenini, and began spending more time than ever in his native Ischia, an island off the coast of Naples that was also home to my ancestors. Our marriage has made it possible for me to see and observe more Italian culture and life than I dreamed possible when I began writing “Our Paesani" in 2003.

To complement "Our Paesani", which is a column about all of Italy and its culture, politics, entertainment, and traditions, I have launched "Two Worlds", a Web site that delves into my personal experiences living in Ischia and New Jersey while trying to grow a freelance writing business and a marriage between an Italian and an American.

At "Two Worlds", I invite you into my life for a bit of virtual espresso and a lot of real conversation. You'll discover my culture shock ("The women really iron sheets and underwear in Ischia!") and my adventures (“"iscover Ischia's thermal pools and spas or the wonders of Fort Lee, N.J.'s George Washington Bridge"). From the beaches of Ischia to the shore of New Jersey, you will join me on a tour of the two worlds that I call home.

But the site is not all one-sided talk. I welcome blog comments and e-mails (see the "Contact Me" box on the right-hand side of the homepage). You are also welcome - and encouraged - to vote in the poll on the right-hand side of the homepage. I will try to change the poll question about once a month.

There is more to the site than just words. I share photo albums that include the food you are likely to find in Ischia, beaches and natural beauty in Italy, and our wedding in Ischia and vow renewal in the United States. From the right-hand side of the homepage, you can also find videos that I periodically place on YouTube, including one featuring a royal parade that recently marched through Ischia Porto, the island's capital and my Italian home.

The star of the Web site, "Two Worlds," is the blog, where I write about my life and career. Specifically, I share photos and stories about everyday happenings, including visits from my American and Australian relatives, everyday observations about island life, and my own emotional roller coaster as I live in two distinctly different places. From the blog, you can click on links to stories and resources that relate to my experiences.

As if all of this were not enough, you can also get to know me as a professional journalist. You can read my resume and view clips of my work for BusinessWeek, Go magazine, and About.com to name a few. For those who are interested in getting advice from my wacky but wonderful Italian family, there is "Advice from I Consiglieri," a collection of columns that I'm continuing to grow, which is at the moment exclusive to "Two Worlds". I hope you'll stop by for a visit, stay a while, bring your friends and family, and come back for more.

If you'd like to be put on my newsletter e-mail list, please drop me an e-mail with your preferred e-mail address at fdimeg10@aol.com. Of course, stay tuned to ItaliansRus.com for the bi-weekly "Our Paesani" column, too.
