  • Italian Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine Winners

    Italian Nobel Prize Winners

    The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine is awarded by the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet. This prize is awarded annually in Stockholm, Sweden during a formal ceremony on December 10. Since 1901 there have been eight winners of Italian descent of this prestigious award. The recipient is listed below with the year they won the award and the reason they were chosen. In some instances the award was shared and in those cases the other recipients are listed.

    Golgi shared this award with Santiago Ramón y Cajal.

    * Daniel Bovet 1957 "for his discoveries relating to synthetic compounds that inhibit the action of certain body substances, and especially their action on the vascular system and the skeletal muscles"

    Salvador E. Luria 1969 "for their discoveries concerning the replication mechanism and the genetic structure of viruses"
    Luria shared this award with Max Delbrück and Alfred D. Hershey.

    Renato Dulbecco 1975 "for their discoveries concerning the interaction between tumour viruses and the genetic material of the cell"
    Dulbecco shared this award with David Baltimore and Howard Martin Temin.

    Rita Levi-Montalcini 1986 "for their discoveries of growth factors"
    Levi-Montalcini shared this award with Stanley Cohen.

    Joseph E. Murray 1990 "for their discoveries concerning organ and cell transplantation in the treatment of human disease"
    Murray shared this award with E. Donnall Thomas.

    Louis J. Ignarro 1998 "for their discoveries concerning nitric oxide as a signalling molecule in the cardiovascular system"
    Louis J. Ignarro shared this award with Robert F. Furchgott and Ferid Murad.

    Mario R. Capecchi 2007 "for their discoveries of principles for introducing specific gene modifications in mice by the use of embryonic stem cells"
    Mario R. Capecchi shared this award with Sir Martin J. Evans and Oliver Smithies.

    * Daniel Bovet is listed as a Swiss-born Italian pharmacologist. He is also included in the Premi Nobel italiani exhibition.
