La Spezia is situated at the geographic crossroads of three regions (Liguria, which it belongs to; Emilia and Tuscany) but it also is in an area connecting Northern and Central Italy: under several aspects its position could therefore be considered a strategic one.

In this context the presence of CAMeC is crucial as it fills a gap both with reference to the area and to the region where, at this moment, there are no centres of contemporary art.

The vocation of this area for contemporary art is not a last minute calling, but has solid roots in the Painting Prize "Golfo della Spezia" which was started by Marinetti in 1933, was resumed in the period between 1949 and 1965, and became an International Prize in the year 2000. In every edition the wish has been expressed for a definitive exhibition centre for the collection, and CAMeC represents the carrying out of such a project, in accordance with the present requirements.

In its quality as the seat of the "Biennale del Golfo", the Centre also acts in synergy with Carrara, where the "Biennale di Scultura" is held, and also with the near territory of Massa and Carrara.

CAMeC's mission is to enliven the centre with different initiatives provided that they all pertain to contemporary art, in each of its forms, from modern dance to contemporary music, form personal monographic exhibitions to thematic collective ones, to lectures; from the presentation of books to the screening of films about the protagonists in the fields of art of the latest decades, from performances to study sessions of the significant moments of contemporary art in our zones, up to meetings to persuade all those who out of habit, formation or choice would not frequent the museum, to enter it.
