  • Parco Lupo Rosso's Howl for Help

    By Anthony Parente

Rubber Chairs help the handicap enjoy Parco Lupo Rosso
Parco Lupo Rosso (Red Wolf Park) is howling for your help! Join the pack and help them bring this vision to life. The park is an idea that goes back to 2009 when a group of men from Bedonia were looking at ways to help boost the town's struggling economy. Like many small towns in Italy, Bedonia struggled with a declining economy due to job loss and a decline in population. The group came up with a plan to utilize the beautiful scenic countryside and create a park that would be available year round. They also knew that they needed to make this park different from a number of other parks throughout Europe. Although these parks were open to people with disabilities they were unable to accommodate their needs. What they plan to do is offer rides that will be handicap accessible and make Parco Lupo Rosso the first park in Europe to offer rides for those with disabilities.

The area they plan to use for the park is 55,000 square meters and the plan is to divide the park into 2 parts. The first part will be free to everyone and will include a picnic area, restrooms and a food service area where you can purchase something to eat. This area will also include a chapel and various walking paths. The idea is to create an area that people can come and just relax and enjoy the scenic views. This will also make a great outdoor classroom to learn more about the flora and fauna located within the park. The second part of the park you will need a ticket to gain entry. This area will include most of the attractions located in the park. The attractions include: zip lining, trails to hike or jog, rope bridges, mountain bike trails, paint ball area, tubing year round and skiing year round.

Not all of the attractions will be handicap friendly, but those with disabilities will get to travel over suspended bridges and if they are feeling adventurous use a zip line. The park will have specialized rubber chairs (see photo above) for handicap people to utilize as they travel on these special elevated platforms. The park will use all precautions to ensure the safety of all its guests. They also plan to create a path over 650 meters long that will go through the woods. The path will be designed to accommodate wheelchairs and strollers. All the service and dining areas will be able to accommodate disabled or handicap people making it one of the few places in Italy equipped to handle this.

One of the features that this park plans to have that intrigues me is the suspended lairs (aka tree houses). These lairs will be like hotel rooms suspended several meters above the ground and they will include a bathroom and a balcony. These small rooms are ideal for campers and anyone who wants to spend the night outdoors. An added feature is that some of the lairs will be handicap accessible.

Parco Lupo Rosso is looking for your assistance to help them secure the remaining funds needed to make this vision come to life. They have created a Go Fund Me page hoping that others will share their vision of creating a handicap accessible park. I urge you to visit their web site http://www.parcoluporosso.it/ to learn more about this project and all the features they plan to offer. This is an incredible opportunity for you to not only help this struggling community but also help create a place that is accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
