Italian Volcanoes
Italy is the only country in mainlan Europe to contain active volcanoes. In fact Italy is a rather volcanically active country. In the past 100 years there have been three different volcanoes that have erupted. Mount Etna located in Sicily is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Stromboli, which is one of the eight Aeolian Islands off the north coast of Sicily, is another volcano that is constantly active with only minor eruptions. Probably the famous of the three active volcanoes is Mount Vesuvius near Naples. It last erupted in March of 1944 during World War II. Of the three active volcanoes Mount Vesuvius is considered the most dangerous in the world given its history for destruction and the fact that nearly 3 million people live in close proximity to the volcano.
