On a rainy and dreary night at Lunga Ridge not far from Henderson Field in the Guadalcanal a 26 year old gunnery Sergeant became a legend and a hero. For six months the Japanese and the Americans were fighting to gain control of Henderson Field. On October 25, 1942 that struggle came to an end when John Basilone, an Italian American from Raritan, New Jersey, withstood wave after wave of attacks by the Japanese to win the battle.

In his pockets, they found 2 rosaries, $1.61, sixteen photographs of family members and one letter. While the other items held a special significance for Babe, the letter - undoubtedly from his family - serves to exemplify his courage and nobility.
