    VERBS OF THE FIRST, SECOND AND THIRD CONJUGATION
    (basic tenses)

    VERBI DELLA PRIMA, SECONDA E TERZA CONIUGAZIONE
    (tempi principali)

    • In Italian there are three conjugations of verbs: in the first the infinitive form ends in -are, in the second the infinitive form ends in -ere and in the third the infinitive form ends in -ire; examples: amare (to love), credere (CREdere)-(to believe), dormire (to sleep).
    • There are regular and irregular verbs.
    SIMPLE PRESENT

    NEGATIVE AND INTERROGATIVE FORMS

    (io) non amo (I do not love) amo io? or io amo? or amo? (do I love?)

    (io) non credo (I do not believe) credo io? or io credo? or credo? (do I believe?)

    (io) non dormo (I do not sleep) dormo io? or io dormo? or dormo? (do I sleep?)

    Examples: Amo Isabella (I love Isabel), io ti amo or io t'amo or t'amo (I love you), Antonio dorme tranquillo nel suo letto (Anthony sleeps quietly in his bed), lei non dorme mai a casa sua (you never sleep in your house), è vero che dormi sempre tutta la mattina? (is it true that you always sleep all morning?), lui dorme spesso fino alle 9 del mattino (he frequently sleeps until 9 a.m.), tutti noi crediamo che tu hai ragione (all of us believe (that) you are right), loro dormono in una tenda (they sleep in a tent), non amo più Carla (I don't love Carla anymore).
