  • The 2006 Italian National Soccer Team

In 2006 Germany hosted the 18th World Cup Tournament. In the end Italy defeated France on penalty kicks to claim their 4th World Cup Title. The format for the event was the same as in 2002. The field consisted of 32 teams. The teams were divided into 8 groups of 4. Only the top two teams in each group advanced to the knockout stage. In the first round Italy was placed in Group E with Czech Republic, Ghana and the United States. Italy finished first in Group E with 2 wins and 1 draw thus qualifying for the knockout stage. In the round of 16 Italy defeated Australia scoring on a penalty kick in extra time. In the quarterfinals Italy defeated Ukraine 3-0 setting up a match in the semifinals with host Germany. The match against Germany looked destined to go to a penalty shootout until Italy struck for two late goals during extra time to win 2-0. The final against France was hotly contested and resulted in a red card being given to Zinedine Zidane for head butting Marco Materazzi in extra time. With the score 1-1 the championship needed to be decided by penalty kicks. Italy was a perfect 5 for 5 while France had one deflect off the crossbar giving Italy their 4th World Title. Below is list of the players that participated in the tournament, goals they scored and the results of each match the team played.
