In 1998 France hosted the 16th World Cup Tournament and in the end they claimed their first title. The format for the event had changed from 1994. The field was expanded to include 32 teams instead of 24. The teams were divided into 8 groups of 4. Only the top two teams in each group advanced to the knockout stage. In the first round Italy was placed in Group B with Austria, Cameroon and Chile. Italy finished first in Group B with 2 wins and 1 draw and qualified for the knockout stage. Italy defeated Norway in the first round of the knockout stage, but lost to France on penalty kicks in the quarterfinals.
