In 1990 Italy hosted the 14th World Cup Tournament, which was won by West Germany. Italy made a strong showing in front of the home crowd but ended up finishing third overall. The format for the event was the same as the one used in 1986. You had 24 teams that qualified and they were divided into 6 groups with 4 teams in each group. The top two teams in each group advanced and the four best third place teams from the six groups also moved on to the knockout stage. In the first round Italy was placed in Group A with Austria, Czechoslovakia and the United States. Italy won all three of their games and moved on to the knockout stage. They would eventually lose to Argentina in the semifinals on penalty kicks. The loss put them in the third place match against England whom they defeated. Italian striker Salvatore Schillaci finished the tournament with 6 goals giving him the Golden Boot for top scorer of the tournament. He was also given the Golden Ball award for being named the best player of the tournament.
