In 1986 Mexico hosted the 13th World Cup Tournament, which was won by Argentina. The format for this event was altered from that used in 1982. The first round stayed the same. You had 24 teams that qualified and they were divided into 6 groups with 4 teams in each group. The next round is where the format change occurred. The top two teams in each group advanced and the four best third place teams from the six groups also moved on to the knockout stage. Italy found themselves in Group A with Argentina, Bulgaria and the Korea Republic. Italy finished second in their group and moved on to the knockout stage. Italy faced France in the round of 16, but they came up short and their hopes of repeating as champs ended.
