The third World Cup was hosted by France in 1938 and was won by Italy. A total of 15 teams participated in the tournament. Austria was supposed to be the 16th team, but they withdrew because in March of 1938 Austria was annexed to the German Third Reich. Once again they used a knockout format, which was different than the current group play. In the end Italy defended their title and won their second World Cup Championship. Due to WWII the next World Cup did not take place until 1950. Italy held the title for a record 16 years from 1934-1950.
