My 2006 World Cup Diary
Discover what it was like to be in southern Italy as the national soccer team vied for the world's most prestigious sporting title Part 4 of 6: The Quarterfinals Our Paesani Ukraine, beloved underdogs led by A.C. Milan's Andriy Shevchenko, worked tirelessly to try and outsmart the Italians in the quarterfinal match. But the Italians played tough and showed their maturity and experience on the field. Luca Toni finally put the critics in their place by scoring two goals. But Toni only came to life after Gianluca Zambrotta got things started with a stunning goal in the sixth minute. Juventus fans know that Zambrotta is like the energizer bunny. He gets the ball and keeps going and going, but he rarely finds the net. I almost always, however, put my faith in Zambrotta. He is a worker bee and that usually pays off in the end - and it definitely did now. People actually walked onto Antonio's terrace to see the television and watch the last minutes of this match. Within moments of its end, people were in the street hollering and waving huge Italian flags. A line of people driving cars and motor scooters came down Ischia's main street honking their horns and hurling flags onto the pavement. It was a street party and everyone was invited.
